Bruno Fernandes weaved his magic against Luxembourg. on Monday at the UEFA Euro Qualifier. Portugal won the game without Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portugal side which was led by Roberto Martinez have won all their six qualifying games. Portugal have netted 24 goals and have not conceded a goal so far in all their games played. This is one of Portugal's biggest victories.
Currently, Portugal are in pole position in Group J. They are ahead of Slovakia by five points. Slovakia are in second place currently in the standings. Manchester United player Fernandes, who scored Portugal's winning goal against Slovakia, orchestrated three of the goals as the Selecao filled their boots and then hammered one to the net. Two goals apiece were scored by Goncalo Ramos, Diogo Jota and Goncalo Inacio.
We take the game very seriously - Ricardo Hota
In a goal-scoring fest, Ricardo Horta and Joao Felix also put their names on their scoresheet. "We are still at the beginning of a new era with a new coach and we are still taking on board the coach's ideas," Jota said. "Today we set a reference point match (to look at in) the future.". Inacio opened the account for Portugal in the 12th minute to get them underway. The second goal was scored by Ramos.
"We have a great group of players, we take every game very seriously," Horta said "We're on the right track, but we have things to improve. Against Slovakia we played a game that was not at the level this team (can offer)." he added. Luxembourg were not given it easy in the game as Portugal dominated the proceedings right through.
It was a satisfactory aspect that, being 4-0 or 5-0 up, the team kept playing the same way as if it was 0-0, Portugal coach Roberto Martinez said. "When you get that, it shows you the values of the players and that the respect toward the team is essential that was really good to see. He added. Ronaldo will rue missing this game as he could have added to his tally of international goals.
