Bayern Munich’s efforts for Bundesliga title defence dealt another blow after they were pulled back to a 2-2 draw by SC Freiburg on Friday. The game was in Bayern's hands until the dying moments, but an 87th-minute equalizer from Lucas Hoeler turned the tide. With this draw, leaders Bayer Leverkusen have a chance to go 10 points clear and increase their chances of winning their maiden German league title.
Freiburg captain Christian Guenter first opened the account in the 12th minute and Mathys Tel's leveled the scoreline in the 35th minute with a stunner. In the second half, both teams put up an impressive performance and neither team could shake the net of their opponents. However, Jamal Musiala's remarkable solo effort broke the deadlock in the 75th minute.
The match looked set to end with three points for Bayern, but Holer had other plans. With just three minutes to go before the final whistle, the Freiburg midfielder chipped a volley through a crowded Bayern penalty area and past a helpless Manuel Neuer.
Speaking after the disappointing draw, Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel called his side "panicky" and criticised the players for a lack of intent. "We played completely without structure and had no discipline and weren't in our positions," Tuchel told DAZN. "We did things that we've never trained, that we've never spoken about. "We played like it was the 85th minute and we were a goal down," he added.
Musiala, who gave Bayern the lead in the second half, told DAZN he felt "frustrated". "Since I've been at Bayern it's been in my head that we must win and we hate to lose. We want to win the Bundesliga, we want to win titles," said the attacking midfielder.
It was Bayern's fourth loss away from home dating back to January in both the Bundesliga and Champions League. Meanwhile, in pursuit of a first Bundesliga title, unbeaten Leverkusen can move 10 points clear of the Bavarians if they win against Cologne on Sunday.
