The Indian Football Team, both Men’s and Women’s, was given the green light to participate in the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou, China. Indian Sports Minister Anurag Thakur confirmed the same in a tweet. "The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, has decided to relax the rules to facilitate the participation of both the teams, which were not qualifying as per the existing criterion," Anurag Thakur said on Twitter on Wednesday, July 26.

"Keeping in mind their latest performances in recent times, the Ministry decided to grant the relaxation. I am sure they will put their best foot forward in the Asian Games and make our country proud," he further added. This comes after Indian Football Team coach Igor Stimac wrote a heartfelt tweet to PM Narendra Modi.

"Honourable Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi ji, I am not sure if someone would have briefed you or updated you about the Indian teams participating in the upcoming Asian Games, where the most important and key global sport "football" team has been deprived from participating and representing the Indian flag," Stimac said in a statement on Twitter.
In the most recent update, the groupings were released for both the Asian Games and the FIFA World Cup 2026. India's Men's football team has been placed in Group A with China, Bangladesh, and Myanmar for the Asian Games. As far as the Indian Women's team is concerned, they have been placed in Group B with Chinese Taipei and Thailand. Talking of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers, Sunil Chhetri’s India will share their group with Qatar, Kuwait, and Afghanistan/Mongolia.

- Group B: Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Mongolia
