Arsenal close gap on Liverpool, Aston Villa lose ground after loss to Newcastle United

English Premier League action resumed with Arsenal winning a key encounter against Nottingham Forest. Aston Villa on the other hand lost at home to Newcastle United to lose ground in the title race.

Liverpool are still at the top of the table 48 points from 21 games. Arsenal now are in the second spot, while Manchester City are third with 43 points from 20 games. With this win, Newcastle United has jumped to seventh in the table. 

Pep Guardiola and his side will take on Burney on Wednesday. If the defending champions win the game they will move to second with 17 matches left to play in the league. Manchester United will take on Wolves on Thursday night in a must-win game. 

Arsenal keep their title hopes alive with a win

In a must-win match, Arsenal beat Nottingham Forest 2-1 to keep their English Premier League hopes alive. Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring in the 65th minute of the game. This was followed by Bakayo Saka scoring in the 72nd minute.

Nottingham Forest pulled one goal back in the 89th minute thanks to Taiwo Awoniyi. The Arsenal defense held on in the final few minutes of the game to eke out a win. Mikel Arteta has been in the news with a possible move to FC Barcelona. 

Over the Villa Park, it was Newcastle United who showed their strength to win the game. Fabian Schar scored twice in four minutes to put the visitors ahead before Alex Moreno scored an own goal to make it 3-0. Ollie Watkins made it 3-1 in the 71st minute but that wasn’t enough as Aston Villa lost the game.

Arsenal will next face Liverpool in a key clash on Sunday at the Anfield Stadium. If the Gunners win the game it will throw the Premier League Title race wide open. Manchester City after facing Burley at home will go away to Brentford before facing Everton at home. 

Liverpool who are leading the table will take on struggling side Chelsea at home. Mauricio Pochettino and his side are tenth in the table and have struggled for form. Just like Manchester United, the Blues need to win to keep their European hopes alive.
