The 28-year-old Indian weightlifter Vikas Thakur won the silver medal in the men’s 96kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. He had also won medals in the previous editions of the CWG. The Himachal-based lad won a silver in the Glasgow Games 2014 followed by a bronze in Gold Coast Games 2018. He won these medals in 85kg and 94kg weight categories respectively.
Apart from that, Vikas Thakur's celebration after winning the medal made it to the headlines as he celebrated with an iconic Punjabi ‘thigh-five’. Later on, he also opened on his style of celebration and said that it was a tribute to the Late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala who died in a brutal killing.
Vikas also shared his grief over the death of the talented singer. He acknowledged that he never met Sidhu but he always loved his songs and Sidhu’s murder left him in a great shock. He was in grief to the extent that he couldn’t eat for two after this news flashed in the media.
Even before coming to the competition, I was listening to his songs - Vikas Thakur on Sidhu Moose Wala
“The Punjabi ‘thapi’ (thigh-five) was a tribute to Sidhu Moose Wala. I did not eat for two days (after his death). I’ve never met him but his songs will remain with me forever. Even before coming to the competition, I was listening to his numbers,” said Thakur in a conversation with PTI.
“I never met him but he will always remain my all-time favorite singer. His songs are always on my phone. Happy or sad, he (his numbers) always keeps me going,” he added later.
Later on, he also talked about his love for the dead Punjabi singer and mentioned a special message while summing up his statement.
“I will always be a big fan of his. He always would say ‘jor bina patta de thapi bajti na’ on the thigh five (you have to give it your all to achieve something). I also was thinking about that while doing the lifts,” the Indian silver medalist concluded.
