In a massive blow to the Indian contingent, Javelin star player Neeraj Chopra has been ruled out of the Commonwealth Games 2022. He was supposed to lead the Indian contingent during the opening ceremony. Besides, a lot of hopes were lying on him for winning a medal, especially after he had won a Silver in the World Athletics Championship. Not to forget, Chopra won Gold in the Olympics last year.
Meanwhile, confirming the news, Rajeev Mehta revealed that the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Gold medalist had informed him about the injury. Mehta said that the injury occurred during the final of the World Athletics Championship.
"He (Neeraj Chopra) is not fit as he got injured in the finals of World Athletics Championships. He informed us about this," Rajeev Mehta, IOA Secretary General, was quoted as saying by ABP news confirming the omission of India's star athlete from CWG 2022.
On the other hand, the 24-year-old after the world event had said that he couldn't give his best shot in the last two attempts due to stiffness in his thigh after the fourth attempt. The Indian Army subedar also had said that he had a strapping on his thigh and would know the status of the injury later.
"I thought even the fourth throw could have gone farther. After that, I felt something on my thigh and could not do my best in the next two. I had strapping (on the thigh). I will know the status tomorrow morning because my body is still warm after the event. I hope there should not be any issue for the upcoming events, Commonwealth Games," he had said post his historic win at the global event.
Now, it seems that the Indian fans who were planning to watch the games, especially the Javelin throw event, will now have to hope that the other players from India to do well. The likes of DP Manu and Rohit Yadav will represent the Indian contingent in the Javelin throw event.
