In what was the second game of the Super Six round of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 qualifier, Sri Lanka played against the Netherlands. Even though the former World Champions have been unbeaten so far, they had to sweat for their win against Scotland in their last game. In the game against the Netherlands too, the Lankan Lions failed to hunt down the Dutch like a lion.

After winning the toss, the Dasun Shanaka-led side elected to bat first. However, the Blue Brigade was in trouble from ball one as Pathum Nissanka bagged a golden duck. Inside the powerplay, the team lost three more wickets. Things got worse as they lost 131/7, threatening to be bowled out for less than 200.

However, the likes of Dhananjaya de Silva (93) and Maheesh Theekshana (28) helped the team reach 213 all out so that they can fight with the ball. For the European side, Logan Van Beek and Bas de Leede took three wickets each. On the other hand, Saqib Zulfiqar took two while Ryan Klein and Aryan Dutt took one each.

Netherlands throws away the chance of creating their second upset

In reply, the Orange Army had a poor start as they lost two wickets for 11 runs. At this stage, the likes of Wesley Barassi and Bas de Leede put together 77 runs and kept the team ahead in the chase. At one point, it started looking like the team will win the game easily.

However, after the former scored his fifty, he was run out by Shanaka. On the other hand, De Leede (43), who started well but couldn't score big. From 88/2, the team was reduced to 151/8. Their skipper Scott Edwards tried his best but the team fell short by 21 runs.
