On 16 July 2023, Pakistan began their two-match Test series in Sri Lanka against them as the first Test took place in Galle. Babar Azam and his men were asked to field first as the Lanka skipper, Dimuth Karunaratne won the toss. While batting first, the home side got bundled out for 312 runs in 95.2 overs.
But, in reply, Pakistan had a horrible start to their first innings as after two sessions on day two, they lost five wickets for 132 runs in 28 overs. Skipper Babar Azam also disappointed his fans as he got out on just 13 runs off 16 balls, including two fours. Seeing that failure, fans went crazy and slammed him brutally.
Babar Azam is the third-ranked batter in the longest format of the game
Prabath Jayasuriya took the wicket of the Pakistan skipper on the fourth delivery of the 15th over. Babar went for a forward defence but managed only an inside edge. It gently popped up off the pad to the short leg and Sadeera Samarawickrama completed the catch. Babar is known as one of the finest batters in the world. So, it was quite shocking and surprising for fans to see him failing to score big. Currently, he is the third-ranked batter in the world in the red-ball format with 862 rating points.
Speaking of the match, for the home side, Dhananjaya de Silva scored 122 runs off 214 balls, including 12 fours and three sixes. Along with him, only Angelo Mathews scored 64 runs off 109 balls, including nine fours. For the Men in Green, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Abrar Ahmed took three wickets each. While Agha Salman grabbed one wicket. In reply, Prabhat Jayasuriya took three wickets along with one wicket each for Kasun Rajitha and Ramesh Mendis in the first 28 overs of Pakistan’s innings. After the second session, Saud Shakeel and Agha Salman were on the crease. Shakeel was batting on 22* runs while Salman was batting on 19* runs.
