Youngest players to hit double hundred in Tests

There are only a few batters in their early Test careers who have hit a double hundred. Most of them went on to have distinguished careers later on

Over the many years of Test cricket, a lot of players have had tough starts to their international careers but went on to do well. On the other hand, some have started well and went on to have different career paths. In this listicle, we will discuss those players who have scored double hundred in Tests at a young age.

10. Jacques Rudolph

The former South Africa Test specialist hit 222 not out against Bangladesh at the age of 22 years and 355 days way back in 2002 when the Proteas toured Bangladesh. His hundred helped the team win the first game by an innings and 60 runs.

9. Don Bradman

In the Ashes 1930, the late Australia skipper hit 254 runs including 25 fours, and helped the team reach 729/6 in reply to the Three Lions' 425 all-out. In the end, the Kangaroos won the game by seven wickets while chasing 72.

West Indies Test skipper hit his highest score, i.e. 212 against Bangladesh in Jamaica. He did it at the age of 21 years and 278 days and helped the team reach 484/7 declared. In the end, the team ended up winning by 10 wickets.

7. Sunil Gavaskar

The former India skipper hit his maiden double hundred in Tests in his debut series against the West Indies in 1971. At the age of 21 years and 277 days, he scored 220 runs when the team needed the most. Despite the Indian bowlers' best efforts, the game ended in a draw with two wickets left.

6. Mahela Jayawardene

In the Asian championship match between India and Sri Lanka, the Men In Blue scored 518/7D. In reply, the Lankan Lions scored 485 all-out with Jayawardene scoring 242 at the age of 21 years and 273 days.  

5. Graeme Smith

The former South Africa skipper hit 200 against the touring Bangladesh in the first Test in 2002. At the time, Smith was a newbie at the highest level and aged 21 years and 259 days.  

4. Gary Sobers

The former West Indies all-rounder scored 365 runs against Pakistan and it was the highest individual score at the time. During the innings, he was 21 years and 213 days.

3. Vinod Kambli

The former India player hit two double-hundreds in the same year, i.e. 1993. His first one came against England and it made him one of the youngest players to do so. In the third Test at his home ground, Wankhede Stadium, he hit 224 runs at the age of 21 years and 32 days.

2. George Headley

The West Indies legend scored 223 runs against England at the age of just 20 years and 308 days.

1. Javed Miandad

The 1992 World Cup winner and the first player to play six ODI World Cups, he hit his maiden double hundred in Tests against New Zealand in Karachi at the age of 19 years and 140 days.
