The manner in which England wicketkeeper batter Jonny Bairstow got out on the final day of Test 2 of Ashes 2023 has caused a massive reaction among Cricketing personalities. The captains and the members of the two teams aside, numerous ex-cricketers decided to weigh in with their opinions on the issue. Now, veteran umpire Simon Taufel decided to voice out his concerns.
“Correct decision made. They (England) just didn’t like it. For that ball to be considered dead after the over or even after the delivery, both sides need to disregard it is in play. Clearly, the fielding side hadn’t,” Taufel told ABC Sydney Mornings. “My experience is when people don’t like a dismissal under laws of cricket, they cite the Spirit of Cricket to support their view,” Taufel also wrote on LinkedIn. “Should a batter be immune from dismissal as per the Laws by simply being negligent (and leaving his ground too early)?” he questioned.
Here's what the captains of both teams had to say about Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal
"My thoughts around it is, when is it justified that umpires have called 'over'? Does the square-leg umpire making some movement justify that? Jonny Bairstow was in his crease and then came out to have a chat in the middle. I’m not disputing if it was out, it was. If the shoe was on the other foot, I would've had to think about the whole spirit of the game. But it has happened, it was out. We have to move on… Do I want to win in that manner? No," said skipper Ben Stokes after the match.
At the same time, Aussie skipper Pat Cummins had different opinions. Cummins said, "You see Jonny does it all the time. He did it on day one to David Warner. He did it in 2019 to Steve
