Mumbai is set to take on UP in the penultimate game of the Women's T20 League. It's the eliminator round and only one team can make it to the final on Sunday against Delhi. One team will have to return home and bid adieu to their hopes of lifting the title in the first season.
How did the match between Mumbai and Delhi pan out?
UP captain Alyssa Healy won the toss and chose to field first but her bowlers did not do justice to her decision as Mumbai were able to score plenty on a rigged surface where run-scoring can be tough. They got the wicket of Yastika Bhatia in the powerplay but Mumbai still managed to score 46 runs off the first six overs.
Hayley Matthews and Natalie Sciver-Brunt took the innings forward and were in a healthy position at the time of the first strategic time-out. 16-year-old Parshavi Chopra got the breakthrough in the very first ball after the powerplay which brought skipped Harmanpreet Kaur to the crease.
Harmanpreet couldn't do much as she only scored 14 in her 15-ball stay at the crease. Amelia Kerr and Sciver-Brunt took the side forward as the latter completed her fifty in just 26 balls and Mumbai was in for a strong finish with the bat.
Amelia Kerr and Sciver-Brunt started the onslaught in the last few overs and grabbed boundaries at will. Kerr was dismissed in the penultimate over but that didn't stop Pooja Vastrakar and Sciver-Brunt to continue their dominance as they took their side to a powerful total of 182 after 20 overs.
UP didn't get the best of starts as Saika Ishaque got the wicket of Shweta Sehrawat in the second over which also was a maiden over. Alyssa Healy, the skipper was dismissed by Issa Wong and UP looked in all sorts of trouble within the first three overs. In the very next over, the in-form Tahlia McGrath was run-out and UP looked helpless.
Kiran Navgire and Grace Harris gave them a strong finish to the powerplay but the score was still very far to be reached. But Sciver-Brunt showed her class again as she got the big wicket of Grace Harris and put UP on the back foot again.
Kiran Navgire tried to up the ante but was dismissed by Issa Wong. Wong took two wickets on the next two balls to complete a wonderful hat-trick. Hayley Matthews dismissed the Indian spinner Deepti Sharma to put more fuel to the fire.
Saika Ishaque got the final wicket of the innings as Mumbai completed an astounding win over UP to qualify for the final. Natalie Sciver-Brunt was the star of the match showing her prowess in both the innings
With this win, Mumbai are now going to play Delhi in the final of the inaugural edition of the Women's T20 League. They look high on confidence under their bold and fearless captain and would want to sprung a surprise for Meg Lanning and her players in two days' time.
