Five Indian players, including captain Yash Dhull, were ruled out of the final league game against Uganda earlier today in the ongoing U-19 World Cup after being tested positive for Covid-19. Some of these players along with Vasu Vats were isolated in the previous game against Ireland after a RAT test.
Vasu resulted negative in the RT-PCR test, confirmed a source from ICC to PTI. Dhull, Aaradhya Yadav, and Shaik Rasheed, who had tested positive in the Rapid Antigen Test (RAT), have returned positive reports in the RT-PCR test along with Manav Parakh, who tested negative in RAT. Siddharth Yadav was already RT-PCR positive before the Ireland game.
The source confirmed that no players from the last match are positive, and are available to play the game against Uganda. Captain Dhull has the most symptoms of all but should be fine before the quarterfinal if they finish at the top of Group B said the source.
“One positive out of this unfortunate situation is that the 11 who played against Ireland have all tested negative,” said the ICC source.
All the players will go under quarantine as per the tournament guidelines, and will only be allowed to play after three negative results.
After the Asia Cup win in UAE, the Indian team flew to the Caribbean. A member of the support staff tested positive during the isolation. The players might have come in close contact with the member.
The entire squad underwent a five-day hard quarantine and took three RTPCR tests in that period. The test report took 48 hours to generate, the third test report was only made available on the seventh day.
“The players mingled with the coach in that period and that seems to be the most likely source of the outbreak in the team,” added the source to PTI.
