Indian team has reached the second spot in the points table of the World Test Championship 2023 following a 2-0 win in the two-match Test series against Bangladesh. Now, they are only behind Australia which is in the top spot with 120 points to their name in the table.
It was an unbeaten partnership of 71 runs for the eighth wicket between veteran Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin and Shreyas Iyer that helped India to cross the line in the second and last of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh.
Given the remaining series between Australia and South Africa, the scenario of qualification for the final is going to be very tough and interesting for these two teams alongside India.
With said that, here we’ll have a look at the updated scenario of qualification for the final of the World Test Championship 2023.
The scenario of Qualification for India and South Africa:
- If the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team beats the Australians by 4-0 during the Test series in February, they will have a PCT of 68.05. On the other hand, it would not be possible for South Africa to qualify for the final even if they finish all remaining matches on the winning. It is because the Proteas would only have a PCT of 66.66.
- If India wins the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia by 3-0, they will finish with a PCT of 64.35. In that case, it would be easy for South Africa to qualify if they win all remaining matches and finish with a PCT of 66.66.
- If India finishes the four-match Test series against Australia at a margin of 3-1, they would have a PCT of 62.5. So, this scenario will also be in favor of Dean Elgar’s men if they win all remaining four matches with a PCT of 66.66.
It can be concluded after going through all scenarios that India’s fortune will rely mostly on the results of the matches of the South African team. So, the Indians need to win their all remaining matches, therewithal they would have to hope for the defeats of South Africa in the latter’s remaining red-ball fixtures.
