In the months leading up to the 20-20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, the World Cricket Governing Council has asked the teams to announce their final squads by September 15, 2022. For the unversed, the same date was given by the body to the cricket boards last year to announce their squads for last year's 20-20 World Cup. At that time, the boards were given an option to make changes in their squads ahead of the tournament.
It could be the same this time around. The only change this year is the number of players in the squad. Last year, 18 players were allowed for the showpiece event including two COVID-19 reserves. This time around, only 15 players will be allowed in the squad. The same thing used to happen in the pre-COVID 19 era.
Talking about the Indian team, they would have to finalize their squad till the end of Asia Cup. The Men In Blue will play the two-match T20I series in Ireland later this month. After this, the team will play three T20Is in England and then travel to the Caribbean Islands for five T20Is. The Asia Cup will follow thereafter.
Meanwhile, former India cricketers, Sanjay Manjrekar and Sanjay Bangar have stated that most of the players in the Indian team have already cemented their places in the Indian team for the event.
“I think he has already confirmed his ticket to Australia. We have seen a lull in a lot of players’ performances, Rishabh Pant for example, but I doubt whether they will drop him for that big ticket to Australia. So Suryakumar Yadav has already proved his worth beyond any doubt. So injury notwithstanding, I see him having that one seat confirmed on that flight to Australia.”
“So, some players have been selected in the squad to give them that experience. I believe that the 11 players who have played in this series so far, and the first-team players who are rested, I think those 17-18 players have already been shortlisted (for the T20 World Cup squad),” Bangar said.
