Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) registered their first victory in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in the 12th game of the tournament on 28 August 2023. But, rather than that six-wicket win, Sunil Narine hit the headlines as he received the first-ever red card in the history of CPL during the clash.
Before the start of this ongoing CPL season, it was confirmed that a red card would be given to remove a player due to slow over-rate in both Men’s and Women’s competitions. The main motive was to tackle the slow over-rate issues during a match. It also suggested that the rule would come into play before the start of the 18th over.

Sunil Narine took three wickets against SKN
According to the rule, a team have to bring a player inside the 30-yard circle if they are behind the required over rate at the start of the 18th over. If the overall things remain the same before the start of the 19th over, then another player needs to come inside again. Even teams are bound to be one man down if it remains the same before the start of the 20th over. Then, the Team skipper will choose a player for the red card whom the skipper will choose. The team need to field with 10 players on the field. Speaking about this match, SKN were 140 runs for four wickets after 17 overs while batting first.
But after 18 overs, TKR were asked to bring one player inside the circle due to their slow over rate. Then, before the start of the final over, Umpire had a chat with the TKR skipper, Kieron Pollard and it seemed that Pollard took Sunil Narine’s name. Hence, the umpire showed him the red card and he had to leave the field. Speaking of the match, TKR chased down the 179-run target with ease in 17.1 overs with six wickets in hand. With the ball, Narine performed brilliantly by taking three wickets for 24 runs in four overs.
