On 7 August 2023, Cricket Australia (CA) announced a preliminary squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup, starting in October in India. However, the same squad will be in action in the South Africa and India tour before the World Cup. But, what attracted the eyes of fans was the selection of a 21-year-old leg spinner from Sydney, named Tanveer Sangha.
Along with Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa, Sangha has been selected as another spinning option. Speaking about him, he is currently busy playing in ‘The Hundred’ tournament for Birmingham Phoenix. His birthplace is in Jalandhar, India from where his father, Jog Sangha moved to Sydney back in 1997. His mother Upneet works as an accountant while his father, Jog works as a taxi driver in Sydney.
Tanveer Sangha has been playing BBL since 2020
In the U-19 World Cup 2020, he was the highest wicket-taker for the Aussies. With this call-up, he became the second Indian-origin spinner to be selected for Australia. Since 2020, he is playing the Big Bash League (BBL) for Sydney Thunder and has picked up 21 wickets so far. In 2022, Sangha had an impressive Sri Lanka A tour but after that, he missed the entire summer and did not play for New South Wales (NSW) due to a lower-back stress injury.
While speaking to the Indian Express newspaper, Sangha’s father told: “I never watched cricket in India. I played kabaddi, volleyball and wrestling. Here, we have wrestling tournaments in winters and Tanveer would often accompany me and play in the junior bouts”.
“When he was ten years old, we got him enrolled in the Ingleburn RSL Club to play cricket. I picked up and dropped Tanveer from our home in Ingleburn to the club and that meant I had to skip some of my taxi rides and work early morning or late at night,” he concluded. As of now, he has played only one youth Test and picked up two wickets. While in 11 youth ODIs, he has taken 24 wickets, at an economy of 3.72.
