Virat Kohli threw a lot of bombs in the post-match press conference after the Pakistan clash. India lost to the green army in the Super Four round of the Asia Cup 2022 by five wickets but the Indian veteran played a decent knock. In the presser, the Delhi-born said that nobody texted him when he quit test captaincy except MS Dhoni.
This did not go well with a lot of people and the recent one to hit back at him was Sunil Gavaskar. The former Indian cricketer has hit back at the Indian legend and criticized him for his comments.
“It's very difficult to say as to whom Virat is referring to. If he would have taken any names, you can then go and ask that person, if you have contacted him or not. What I have heard is that he is talking about only MSD having called him after leaving Test captaincy,” Gavaskar said.
The former legend opined that Virat Kohli must have pointed out the person he was referring to. Gavaskar further added that he should have texted the person directly and advised him not to take a dig indirectly.
“If he is talking about former players, who have played with him, we know who all from that lot come on TV. He should name the player he is referring to. Ask them Kya Bhai aapne koi Message nahi kiya (Bro, you didn't message me?),” the former cricketer added further.
That chapter is already closed: Sunil Gavaskar
Not happy with the Indian veteran’s statement, the 73-year-old further questioned what the veteran actually wanted. He asked if Virat Kohli needed encouragement and said that he cannot expect that since his captaincy stint was already over by then.
"What message did he want? Encouragement? But then he is done with captaincy, so why would he need encouragement? That chapter (captaincy) is already closed," he questioned.
The former cricketer added further that Kohli needed to focus on his game and not on such statements. He highlighted the effects that come up with captaincy and said that the veteran should focus only on his game.
"Now you are playing only as a cricketer. So focus on that role because when you are the captain, you think about and worry about your mates. Once captaincy is over, it's time to focus on your own game," Gavaskar concluded.
