Sri Lanka and Namibia locked horns in the inaugural encounter of the 20-20 World Cup 2022 at GMHBA stadium in South Geelong of Victoria. Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka won the toss and asked the Namibians to bat first. Batting first, Namibia posted a decent total of 163 runs for the loss of seven wickets.

While chasing the target, Namibia’s bowling attack completely outmuscled the Sri Lankan batting lineup with the collective brilliance of all the bowlers. They bundled up the Asian Champions only on the score of 108 runs in 19 overs to come up with a big upset on the first day of the eighth edition of the 20-20 World Cup.

Speaking of the match, Namibia faced some early blows as they lost their both openers only on a total score of 16 runs. Middle-order batter Jan Frylinck played a brilliant knock of 44 runs off 28 balls with four boundaries to his name. Other than him, JJ Smit also scored unbeaten 31 runs off just 16 balls with two boundaries and two sixes.

Stephen Beard also played a crucial knock of 26 runs along a 20-run knock each by skipper Gerhard Erasmus and number three batter Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton. On the backs of these knocks, Namibia posted a total of 163 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the allotted 20 overs.

While chasing the target, skipper Dasun Shanaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa were the only two batters who individually crossed the 20-run mark for Sri Lanka. Riding on the stellar performances from the bowlers, Namibia wrapped up the Lankan tigers only on the score of 163 runs to win the match by 55 runs. Four out of six bowlers from Namibia scalped two wickets each for the team including JJ Smit who claimed one wicket.

Jan Frylinck won the ‘player of the match for his match-defining knock in the favour of Namibia.
