West Indies (WI) are gearing up to play the World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe in order to get qualified for the upcoming ODI World Cup in India. In the Cricket World Cup Super League, they finished in the ninth position with 88 points in 24 matches. Only the first eight teams managed to get qualified automatically.

Now, the Caribbeans will play the qualifiers in Zimbabwe as the event will run from 18 June to 9 July 2023. So, they announced the squad for the event as players like Keemo Paul managed to make a comeback. But, Shimron Hetmyer failed to get a place, and seeing that, fans slammed the West Indies Board on social media.

Shimron Hetmyer last played for West Indies in August 2022

Shimron Hetmyer is currently busy playing in the ongoing IPL for Rajasthan Royals (RR). He last played for West Indies in August 2022. However, he did not play in the 20-20 World Cup 2022 and that created a huge controversy. The selection panel of WI named Shamarh Brooks as his replacement for the World Cup as he missed the scheduled flight to Australia. On 1 October 2022, Hetmyer was scheduled to take the flight. But, he wanted to reschedule it due to personal reasons.

Then, on 3 October, a flight got rescheduled but again, Hetmyer informed the CWI's director of cricket, Jimmy Adams, that he would not be travelling. After that, Adams claimed that Hetmyer had been informed that "any further delay" in travel would cost him his World Cup spot. So, finally, he got replaced by Brooks. However, West Indies failed to qualify for that World Cup as they failed to win in the qualifiers. In this ongoing IPL season, Hetmyer has played some good knocks for his franchise. So it was quite shocking to see him not getting a palace in the squad.

West Indies Squad: Shai Hope (c), Rovman Powell (vc), Shamarh Brooks, Yannic Cariah, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Gudakesh Motie, Keemo Paul, Nicholas Pooran, and Romario Shepherd.
