'We'll see who goes to play the Indian T20 League' - Ramiz Raja speaks about a big change in PSL

The Indian T20 league is unarguably the biggest T20 league in the world. Owing to its success, it is a benchmark for other T20 leagues. Every year, it generates a lot of revenue. On the other hand, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) is another T20 league that is slowly and steadily emerging.

However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja has called for a few changes in Pakistan's T20 league. He feels that this is the ideal time to “elevate the concept of PSL”.

While addressing the media at the National Stadium in Karachi, Raja spoke about introducing the auction system instead of the draft system, which is currently been used in the PSL. He was of the opinion that the league could act as a catalyst to generating more revenues. The PCB chairman spoke about the possibilities of Pakistan's T20 league competing with the Indian T20 league If they adopt this new auction model.

"We need to create new properties to be financially independent. We have nothing for now but the PSL and ICC funds. There's an argument over the model from next year; I want to switch it to an auction model from next year. The market forces are conducive, but we'll sit down with the franchise owners to discuss it. This is a game of money.

When the cricket economy grows in Pakistan, our respect will rise. The main driver of that financial economy is the PSL. If we take the PSL to auction model, increase the purse, then I'll put it in the ITL bracket. And then we'll see who goes to play the ITL over the PSL," said Ramiz Raja.

In the meanwhile, he also spoke about a few changes which could be undertaken in the PSL. Raja stated that they wanted the league to be on a home and away basis from the upcoming year. He also said that he spoke to a couple of franchise owners, and stated that they were happy to experiment.

"We want the PSL to be on a home and away basis from next year. The gate money will be excellent, and we want to elevate the concept of the PSL. Every side's purse will increase, and if they want to improve they'll have to spend money. When you go from a draft system to this, the world's talent suddenly becomes available to you," he said.

I've spoken to a couple of the franchise owners; they're quite happy to experiment with this. I'll talk to the others, too. It's in the embryonic stages, but it's top of my wish list," he added.
