Sri Lanka is currently going through a financial crisis and are amidst violent protests in its aftermath. There were reports that Sri Lanka vs Australia series won't take place. However, the all-format series started as scheduled. The fans turned up in great numbers despite several difficulties.
The series started with three T20Is in Colombo and Pallekele. The visitors won the first two games in Colombo but were denied the clean sweep in Pallekele. After this, they played the five-match ODI series with the first two games played in Pallekele and the rest in Colombo. To the delight of the Lankan fans, Sri Lanka managed to win the series by 3-2 margin after trailing by 0-1.
The home side took an unassailable lead of 3-1 after winning the fourth game. The Aaron Finch-led side managed to salvage some pride after winning the last game by four wickets. After the game, they received appreciation from the local fans. In the video uploaded by cricket.com.au, Glenn Maxwell spoke about how the crowd supported them in the series.
"That was pretty extraordinary and I was just saying to the boys. That was one of the most special feelings being able to walk around the ground and have a foreign country all cheer for you. A lot of times when Australia tours we are the generally the enemy and there's not many Australian fans in the stands but to have the support and fans that are here at the moment is truly extraordinary. Everyone's wearing yellow. They have got all the Australian flags all over the place. Its extremely special and it's credit to everyone that's been able to get out here. It's been such a tough time obviously for the local and for them to come out and support us and hopefully both teams can entertain them and they've had a really good time during the one day series," Maxwell said.
