Another controversy hit the ongoing Ashes 2023 on day five of the ongoing fifth Test at the Oval. It was the first ball of the 66th over as Moeen Ali was bowling to Steve Smith. Smith tried to nudge the ball to the leg side but it touched his gloves and lofted towards Ben Stokes at the leg slip.

The England skipper grabbed the ball with one hand with a full-stretched jump but somehow, while celebrating, he fumbled and threw the ball into the ground. All England players went for the appeal but from the facial expression from Stokes, it seemed that he dropped the catch. The umpire looked confused also and he decided not to give the Aussie batter out.

Then, the home side went for a review. After several replays, it got confirmed that there was a definite edge on the gloves and Stokes also grabbed the catch. But, when the ball went out of his hand, it turned out to be not so much convincing for the third umpire and Smith survived a scare. It was another controversy in this ongoing Ashes and fans went crazy also. Speaking of the match, Australia began day five with 135 runs on board without any wickets. But, Chris Woakes was on fire as he sent back both David Warner and Usman Khawaja early.

Warner scored 60 runs off 106 balls while Khawaja scored 72 runs off 145 balls. After that, Mark Wood dismissed Marnus Labuschagne cheaply for just 13 runs off 33 balls. After that, Steve Smith and Travis Head steadied the ship as they finished the morning session with 238 runs for three wickets in 66 overs. Smith was batting on 40* runs off 61 balls while Head was unbeaten on 31 runs off 53 balls. Still, they needed 146 runs in the upcoming two sessions with seven wickets in hand. But, the start of the second session got delayed due to rain.
