The Ranchi-born cricketer got run out in the dying moments of the game. This eventually ended the Men In Blue's hopes of reaching the final. After this game, the 350-ODI veteran went on a hiatus from all forms of cricket. He missed every series from there on and the Indian Cricket Board kept saying that he was rested.

In January 2020, when the 90-Test veteran wasn't included in the central contract, it was almost clear that the right-hander might not play again for the national team. In August same year, he officially announced his retirement from the international game.

Since then, he is only playing in the Indian T20 League and won the trophy in 2021 edition. Meanwhile, three years after his last international game, the three-time World Championship-winning skipper celebrated his 41st birthday in England.
