After the rescheduled Test and the three-match T20I series between India and England, the two teams locked horns in the opening match of the three-match ODI series on Tuesday. Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to field in the overcast conditions at the Oval. The big news from the Indian team was Virat Kohli’s absence from the eleven due to a groin strain. The England team had their senior players namely Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow back in the eleven after they were rested for the T20I series.

The Indian bowling led by Jasprit Bumrah was all over the English batters right from the word go. Bumrah’s first over was a double-wicket maiden as he scalped both dangerous Jason Roy and Joe Root for a duck. The two early blows brought the star all-rounder Ben Stokes to the crease who joined Jonny Bairstow at the wicket. The ball was dancing to the tunes of Indian opening bowlers Bumrah and Mohammed Shami.

Stokes faced an absolute peach of a delivery first-up on the fourth ball of the third over of the innings by Mohammed Shami. The southpaw was left dumbfounded by the Indian seamer as he edged it to the wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant who completed an incredible catch diving to his right. The ball swung and moved in as Stokes tried to defend it only for the ball to take the inside edge of his bat.

The fall of Stokes’ wicket meant things going from bad to worse for England as they were reduced to 7/3 inside three overs.

England were then bundled for 110 in just 25.2 overs, and managed to surpass their lowest-ever ODI total of 86 which they scored against Australia in 2001. The Indian bowlers were simply too good for the England batters. While Bumrah picked up six wickets, Shami picked three wickets. Thus, the visitors managed to quickly wrap up the game, and chased the total down to go 1-0 up in the series.
