India is set to break their major trophy drought in the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup scheduled for June in the USA and the Caribbean islands. Following a near miss in the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia, where they fell short, India aims to secure their first major title since 2013. Significant changes have occurred in India's T20I squad since the 2022 T20 World Cup, where they were led by Rohit Sharma and faced a semifinal defeat against England.
Hardik Pandya assumed the T20I captaincy post the major event, with uncertainty surrounding the T20I future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, eagerly awaited by fans. In the midst of this, Gautam Gambhir has chosen Rohit Sharma as his captain for the 2024 T20 World Cup. In an interview with Sportskeeda, the former India opener expressed his desire for Rohit to lead the team.
"Absolutely, both [Kohli and Rohit] need to be picked, both should be picked. And, more importantly, I want to see Rohit Sharma captain in the T20 World Cup. Yes, Hardik Pandya has captained in T20Is, but I still want to see Rohit Sharma captain in the T20 World Cup. In this World Cup, he has shown that with his batting. If Rohit Sharma is picked, Virat Kohli will automatically get picked. If Rohit Sharma decides to play the T20 World Cup, he should be selected as a captain and not just as a batter," Gambhir told Sportskeeda.

Rohit Sharma to quit T20I captain
As per numerous reports have hinted that Rohit may not participate in T20I cricket in the future. However, there is no official statement from the Indian Cricket Board (ICB) or the player himself. With Hardik currently unavailable, Suryakumar Yadav has taken on the role of captain in the series against Australia. KL Rahul, who has led Team India in all three formats, appears to be the leading candidate to assume leadership in Hardik's absence.
India is set to play three T20Is against South Africa and Afghanistan in the remaining part of the 2023/24 season. It will be interesting to see how the team management and current ODI skipper Rohit Sharma thinks of his future in the shortest format of the game.
