There were a lot of noises surrounding David Warner before the Pakistan 2023-24 tour of Australia. The three-match Test series kicked off on Thursday with Australia winning the toss and opting to bat first. Despite his poor form in red-ball cricket, the decision to pick Warner was heavily criticised. However, the veteran opener shut down the critics as he began his Test cricket swansong with a blazing half-century.

Pat Cummins' decision to bat first turned out to be a wise call as Warner and Usman Khawaja dominated the first session. Both were solid against Pakistan's bowling attack, with Warner, playing his final Test series, adopting an attacking attitude. The southpaw completed his fifty in the 15th over with three consecutive fours off Faheem Ashraf. The feat came in just 41 balls, with the bulk of the runs coming through boundaries.

Warner showed no signs of stopping and he didn't even spare Pakistan's premier pacer, Shaheen Shah Afridi. The 37-year-old's six against the left-arm pacer in the 22nd over caught the attention of cricket fans. Warner dispatched the second ball of the over into the stands with a ramp shot over the long leg. He got down, used his body to get inside the line, and hit a stunning maximum - pure T20 stuff.

Khawaja and Warner made 117 in 25 overs before the players dispersed for Lunch on Day 1. They haven't put a foot wrong since winning the toss and Pakistan desperately needed a breakthrough to get back into the game. Shaheen and Khurram Shahzad started the spell, and within a span of a few overs, the former got the big wicket of Khawaja. The left-hander attempted to drive it down the ground but only managed a nick behind. He departed for 41 off 98 balls. Meanwhile, Warner is looking set to score his 26th Test hundred.
