The former Pakistan skipper Babar Azam once again found himself at the centre of attraction this time around in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Babar appeared visibly enraged during his match for Rangpur Riders in the BPL 2024 encounter against Durdanto Dhaka on Saturday, January 27, held at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. Babar expressed his dissatisfaction with Dhaka's wicketkeeper, Irfan Sukkur. Dhaka batter Mohammad Naim Sheikh was observed calming Irfan down.

Babar was overheard repeatedly stating that I was not addressing you as he approached Irfan. Concurrently, Babar expressed his discontent to his batting partner, Mohammad Nabi. Subsequently, the on-field umpires intervened to restore order to the proceedings. This matter later on came to rest as sanity prevailed in the middle. 

The prolific Pakistan batter made a remarkable performance as he steered the Riders to a victory by 79 runs. Opening the batting, the 29-year-old swiftly reached his half-century in just 41 balls. The experienced player then proceeded to accumulate 62 runs off 46 balls, including 5 fours and a six, before being dismissed by Danushka Gunathilaka.

Babar Azam has been in sensational form in BPL 2024

It was courtesy of the brilliant batting performance, the Riders posted a competitive total of 183 for 8 on the scoreboard. Subsequently, they dismissed Dhaka for 104 runs in 16.3 overs to clinch the victory. Babar's stellar performance earned him the Player of the Match award. In the ongoing BPL 2024 season, Babar has showcased his batting prowess, amassing 120 runs in three matches at an impressive average of 60 and a strike rate of 116.50. Notably, he has recorded two half-centuries to his credit. In the initial encounter against Sylhet Strikers, Babar played a crucial unbeaten knock of 56 runs, steering his team from a precarious position of 39 for 6.

 Furthermore, the talismanic Pakistan batter is on the brink of achieving a significant milestone in T20 cricket, nearing the illustrious mark of 10,000 runs. The talented Lahore-born batter is just 205 runs shy of joining the exclusive club of players who have reached this remarkable feat. As for the Riders' performance in the tournament, they currently occupy the fourth position in the standings, having accumulated 4 points. Their commendable net run rate of +0.734, coupled with victories in two out of four matches, has contributed to their favourable position in the table.
