The Indian team is currently playing a three day warm-up game against Select County XI at Chester-le-Street. The match was not scheduled when the tour was planned but was organised by the England Cricket Board (ECB) as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) requested the same after India’s loss in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand. The match is an opportunity for India to fix their jigsaw ahead of the marquee five-match Test series against England.
ECB had announced the 14 member squad, with Warwickshire’s Will Rhodes named as the captain to face India. However, when the playing XI was revealed, inclusion of Indian pacer Avesh Khan and spinner Washington Sundar in the County XI surprised many.
Meanwhile, the Indian management decided to rest skipper Virat Kohli and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, with Rohit Sharma leading the team. With Shubman Gill injured, the Indian team will be looking to finalise the second opener. As for this game, they slotted Mayank Agarwal to open with Sharma. However, the right-hander wasted the opportunity and was dismissed cheaply. With Pant recovering from Covid and Wriddhiman Saha also in isolation, KL Rahul will don the keeping gloves. R Ashwin, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma are also warming the bench.
India XI: Rohit Sharma (C), Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Hanuma Vihari, KL Rahul (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami.
County XI: Haseeb Hameed, Jack Libby, Robert Yates, Washington Sundar, Will Rhodes (C), Lyndon James, James Rew, James Patterson-White, Jack Carson, Craig Miles, Avesh Khan
