On 15 September, India will take on Bangladesh in the ‘Super 4’ stage of the ongoing Asia Cup in Colombo. However, this fixture has no significance in the context of the tournament as the Men in Blue already qualified for the final with wins over Pakistan and Sri Lanka respectively. While the Bangla Tigers are already eliminated.
They lost their matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the ‘Super 4’ stage. So, with India’s win over the Lankans, Bangladesh were officially eliminated. But, now, ahead of the clash with India, ESPNCricinfo have reported that their veteran wicketkeeper batter, Mushfiqur Rahim is all set to miss the game.
Mushfiqur Rahim has scored 131 runs in four innings in the Asia Cup 2023
As per the reports, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have approved his leave extension to stay back at home with his wife for his newborn baby. After their loss against the Lankans, he and skipper, Shakib Al Hasan were flown back to Dhaka, Bangladesh. BCB’s cricket operations chairman, Jalal Yunus informed the press that both Shakib and Mushfiqur arrived in Dhaka due to some personal reasons. Hence, it will be interesting to see if Shakib joins the team or not before the clash as Bangladesh are reportedly not getting the services of Mushfiqur.
However, in this ongoing tournament so far, he has scored 131 runs in four innings, including one fifty. The tournament has been a disaster for the Bangla Tigers. In the group stage, they lost against Sri Lanka but a win over Afghanistan helped them to qualify for the ‘Super 4’ stage. But, then, they lost both of their matches against the Men in Green and the Lankans. Now, they will look to end this tournament with a win over the Men in Blue. After this, they will play a three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting on the 21st of September. Then, they will be in action for the upcoming ODI World Cup in India, starting on 5 October 2023.
