Team India has been in superb form in recent times in all formats of the game. They are the only team to be a part of the top two rankings in Tests, ODIs, as well as T20Is. In the longest and shortest formats of the game, the 'Men in Blue' hold the No. 1 spot, while in ODIs, they are now placed in 2nd position.
The 'Men in Blue' took over Pakistan in the rankings, after the Asian Giants lost their Super 4 match against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup. The two-time Asian champions are now at the third spot in the rankings with 115 points.
India only team to be ranked in the top 2 across all formats
India has two matches left, one with Bangladesh and the other one is the Asia Cup final. The two-time World champion can become the No.1 ODI team as well if Australia who are currently playing South Africa in an ODI series.
If the Aussies lose their last two matches against the Proteas and India wins the two matches, they will be the only team to be in the No.1 ranking in all three formats of the game. Before the World Cup, it will be a huge boost for the Rohit Sharma-led side.
They will try to add the prestigious trophy to their cabinet, something that has been missing them since their triumphant campaign in the Champions Trophy back in 2013. They came very close to adding one earlier this year as they played in the finals of the World Test Championship. India have lost two semi-finals in 2015 and 2019. The last time they won the World Cup was at home in 2011. This time they will try to get the advantage of the home conditions and win it for the third time.
The reason behind India's success, over the years, has been its strong top order. It continues with the trio of captain Rohit Sharma, the youngster Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli. All three players are averaging well in excess of 50 in 2023.
Shubman Gill is ranked at a career-high No. 2 at the moment while Virat is at No. 8, followed by Rohit at No. 9. Indian fans would be hoping for this trio to continue their good form with the World Cup near the corner.
