Virat Kohli stepped down as India's Test captain on Saturday. He had made the decision a day after his team's Test series loss to South Africa. As of now, it has been reported that KL Rahul could be appointed as Kohli's successor in red-ball cricket.

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly has come forward and lauded Virat Kohli's captaincy contribution in the longest format. However, the former has also made it clear that it was Kohli's 'personal' decision to relinquish Test captaincy.

Taking to the micro-blogging site, Sourav Ganguly gave special mention to Virat Kohli by saying that under his leadership, Indian cricket has made 'rapid strides' across formats, and at the same time, Ganguly also went on to say that Kohli's decision to step down as the red-ball skipper is 'personal' and the BCCI respects it 'immensely'.

Sourav Ganguly concluded by saying that Virat Kohli will be an important member to take Team India to newer heights in the future.

The reigning BCCI President's statement supposedly has ended all the speculations regarding the national cricket board's involvement in Virat Kohli relinquishing his Test captaincy. Kohli was involved in a tussle with the BCCI after his unexpected sacking as the ODI skipper last month.

Meanwhile, Kohli had also contradicted Ganguly's claims. During a media interaction, Sourav Ganguly had stated that Virat was asked to reconsider his decision to step down as India's T20I captain which he did not oblige. Nonetheless, while speaking at the pre-departure press conference ahead of the South Africa series, the batting icon rubbished all claims by saying that he was not asked by anyone to reconsider his decision and was only informed about the change in leadership in the 50-overs format just one-and-a-half hours before his call with selectors to pick a squad for the ongoing series.
