Fans were eagerly waiting to see the Mumbai franchise in action as they took on Bangalore in their Indian T20 League 2023 opener on 2 April. After a terrible last season, fans were hoping for a better performance in the first match from Rohit Sharma and his men. However, Tilak Varma impressed everyone with his form in that season.

He was one of the shining stars for Mumbai despite they finished at the bottom of the table in the 2022 edition. In that season, Tilak Varma scored 397 runs in 14 games, at an average of 36.09. So, fans were expecting to see him showing the same form this time around again for the franchise.

In 2022, while speaking to News24, Tilak Varma opened up about how Rohit Sharma helped him to tackle pressure situations. He said: “Personally, I talked a lot with Rohit bhai about how to improve my batting. I had done well this season and my thinking process was to always do well for the team and win as much games as I can for them. There were a few matches where I could not finish off. Afterwards, Rohit Bhai told me to back myself and as soon as I understood the situations better, it will automatically improve.”

Speaking of the match, Faf du Plessis won the toss and asked Mumbai to bat first. But, Bangalore bowlers were on a roll as they took three wickets of Mumbai for 20 runs. Then, Tilak Varma came out to bat along with Suryakumar Yadav. But, he did not disappoint as Tilak smashed 84* runs off 46 balls, including nine fours and four sixes. His shots all around the ground left fans as Mumbai finished with 171 runs on the board for seven wickets in 20 overs. Fans came up and heaped high praises on the star young batter of Mumbai.
