On 14 July 2023, England’s 2019 ODI World Cup final win over New Zealand completed four years. It was their first World Cup and fans went crazy after Eoin Morgan and his men accomplished the mission. However, it was the second consecutive heartbreak for the Kiwis after losing the final against Australia in the 2015 ODI World Cup final.

But, a controversy arose from that game when umpires mistakenly awarded an extra run to England and after a dramatic finish, the game ended in a tie. So super over took place and again, both teams managed a tie. So, then, on the basis of a superior boundary count, England got crowned as the champion.

Ben Stokes won the Player of the Match award in the 2019 ODI World Cup

Speaking of the match, New Zealand batted first and scored 241 runs for eight wickets in 50 overs. In reply, Ben Stokes played an unimaginable knock of 84* runs off 98 balls. But, on the last ball, they needed two runs with one wicket in hand. But, they managed to take a single and Mark Wood got run out. After that, in the super over, England scored 15 runs and set a target of 16 runs for the Kiwis. In reply, they toiled hard and on the last delivery, needed two runs. But, managed only single and the super over also got tied. Then, as per the rule, England were crowned champion as they hit more boundaries than New Zealand.

Stokes won the Player of the Match award also for that knock. During the post-match presentation ceremony, he said: "I'm pretty lost for words. All the hard work over four years to get here, and to be champions of the world is an amazing feeling. Playing against New Zealand is always a great event to be a part of. They're a seriously good team, they're a bunch of good lads. I spoke to Kane, I apologised (for the deflection for overthrows)."
