But, on 7 June 1975, Gavaskar played one of the most bizarre innings in ODI history. He scored 36* runs off 174 balls against England at Lord’s in the first game of the World Cup. Such a slow-paced inning left all fans stunned and till now, this inning is often talked about when Gavaskar’s name comes up. Now, on 7 June 2023, fans have recalled the knock and trolled him brutally on social media.

“It was the most disgraceful and selfish performance I have ever seen” - Team Manager Gulab Ramchand on Sunil Gavaskar’s innings

Speaking of the match, England batted first and scored 334 runs for four wickets in 60 overs. In reply, India scored only 132 runs for three wickets in 60 overs and lost the match by 202 runs. Such lack of intensity from the former India batter is still a big question to all India fans. According to Wisden, after the match, Gavaskar said that the pitch was too slow and shot-making was very difficult. While other sources claimed that Gavaskar was unhappy with the team selection. He even was not happy that Srinivas Venkatraghavan was the captain.

Seeing such an inning, Team Manager Gulab Ramchand blasted Gavaskar and said: “It was the most disgraceful and selfish performance I have ever seen… his excuse was, the wicket was too slow to play shots but that was a stupid thing to say after England had scored 334. The entire party is upset about it. Our national pride is too important to be thrown away like this.”

After many years, Gavaskar shared his side of the story and said: “I asked myself, ‘Why the hell did I not walk the second ball? I was caught behind and would have been out for zero. But nobody appealed. I had flashed outside the off stump… it was just such a faint nick that nobody appealed. The bowler went ‘ah’ and the keeper, Alan Knott, who was standing some way back, did the same. There was no real appeal, no proper ‘how’s that?’ That little moment of hesitation got me so much flak all these years.”
