All eyes were on Rohit Sharma as his Mumbai franchise kicked off their Indian T20 League 2023 season on 2 April. They took on the Bangalore franchise in the Chinnaswamy stadium. However, in the last season, Mumbai finished at the bottom of the table. So, fans were expecting a good start from the team this time around.
On the other hand, Mumbai last time won their opening match in this tournament in 2012. So, fans were worried as they were preparing to face Faf du Plessis and his men. Rohit Sharma even had a forgettable season with the bat. In the last season, he scored only 268 runs in 14 matches, at an average of 19.14.
Rohit Sharma scored only one run off 10 balls against Bangalore
However, before kicking off this season, Mumbai dealt with major blows as star players like Jasprit Bumrah and Jhye Richardson got ruled out due to injuries. Regarding that, during the pre-season conference, Rohit Sharma said: "Losing Bumrah has been a big loss for us, I'll be honest with that. But by losing a player sometimes you get opportunity.”
"For me, the big thing about this season for our bowling line-up is we have got experience, but we've got one or two little spaces for couple of the juniors to come through and showcase their skills. I'm looking forward to seeing them. The Indian T20 League is a massive event and it's going to be a great opportunity for some of our young boys to really show up,” the Mumbai skipper further added.
Speaking of the match, Bangalore won the toss and opted to bowl first. For Mumbai, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan came out to open the innings. But, Rohit failed to score big as he scored only one run off 10 balls before getting out to Akash Deep. So, seeing that failure, fans went crazy and shared their disappointment on social media platforms.
Here is how fans have reacted to the failure of Rohit Sharma in the opening match of Mumbai in the ITL 2023:
