Over the years many Cricket captains have written their names in the annals of the game. Clive Lloyd, Steve Waugh, Sourav Ganguly, Stephen Fleming, and MS Dhoni are some of the greatest captains in the game.
With time and with different Cricket formats coming into play, captaincy has become a huge task. Some of the players now need to also lead their respective sides in franchise cricket.
In this article, we cast a look at the top 7 players to win a game of cricket on their captaincy debut
Ricky Ponting - Australia
The former Australian skipper is perhaps one of the greatest to have led a side in international. Ricky Ponting replaced Steve Waugh and took his side to greater heights. The former right-handed batter began his captaincy stint with a Test match win against Sri Lanka. This was followed by an ODI win versus South Africa and a T20I triumph versus the Kiwis.
Mahela Jayawardene - Sri Lanka
Counted as one of the greatest batters of all time, Mahela Jayawardene made batting look easy. As a captain, Jayawardene was known to lead his side from the front and formed a great partnership with his good friend Kumar Sangakkara. The first win for Jayawardene as skipper came in 2004 vs Zimbabwe, while the Test and T20I wins came in 2006.
Virender Sehwag - India
The man who redefined opening batting across the world was also a shrewd skipper. Virender Sehwag first beat Bangladesh in 2003 to win on his ODI Captaincy debut. This was followed by a Test win against Sri Lanka in 2005 in Ahmedabad. Virender Sehwag incidentally was the captain of Team India who made an amazing debut to their entry into the T20I format.
Adam Gilchrist - Australia
The greatest wicketkeeper and batter ever to play the game of cricket. Adam Gilchrist was also more than able to deputy first to Steve Waugh and then to Ricky Ponting. Gilly as he is fondly called won on his Test and ODI captaincy debut in 2000 and 2001 versus the West Indies. His T20I captaincy was in 2007 which saw his Australian side beat the Sri Lankans.
Ross Taylor - New Zealand
Along with Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor was the cornerstone of New Zealand batting for over a decade. Ross Taylor first captained his side in an ODI game versus Australia which he won. This was followed by Ross Taylor beating Pakistan in his debut as T20I skipper the same year. His Test debut as the skipper came a year later where he went on to beat Zimbabwe.
Ajinkya Rahane - India
India’s Ajinkya Rahane might be fighting for his international career right now but his captaincy has brought lots of laurels. Rahane made his captaincy debut on the 2015 tour of Zimbabwe winning both his ODI and T20I matches on debut. Then in 2017, when Virat Kohli missed the final Dharamshala, it was Rahane who masterminded the win over the Aussies.
Dinesh Chandimal - Sri Lanka
When Dinesh Chandimal broke into the Sri Lankan he was called the next big thing in cricket. The captaincy debut for Dinesh Chandimal happened in 2013 when he beat South Africa and Bangladesh in ODI and T20I respectively. The right-handed batter then led his side to a test win against Zimbabwe in 2017.
