After a wait of four years, the Asia Cup is set to start on August 27, 2022. Notably, the upcoming edition was supposed to be played in 2020. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament was postponed till 2021. But then again, the tournament was postponed to this year due to the same reason. Sri Lanka were meant to host the tournament.

However, due to the political tensions in the Island nation, the tournament has been shifted to the UAE. Sri Lanka Cricket, though, still has the hosting rights for the tournament. Meanwhile, in this listicle, we will discuss the five players who have scored the most runs in the history of the Asia Cup 2022.

Top-five run-getters in the history of the tournament

  1. Sanath Jayasuriya

The former Sri Lanka skipper is the highest run-getter in the tournament. From 1990 to 2008, he scored 1220 runs at an average of 53.04, including six hundreds. The left-hander was part of the 2008 winning team that beat India in the final.

Apart from that, he was also part of the 2004 and 1997 winning teams that beat India in the final on both occasions. He retired from the game in 2011.

2. Kumar Sangakkara

The former wicketkeeper batter from Sri Lanka has played in the Asia Cups from 2000 to 2014. In these years, he has scored 1975 runs in 26 games at an average of 48.86, including four tons. Just like his former teammate, he hasn't played in the T20I format of the tournament.

The left-hander retired from the game in 2015. He was part of the team which won the 2004 and 2008 editions of the Asia Cup. He led the side in 2010 but India took revenge for the previous two edition defeat.

3. Sachin Tendulkar

The Master Blaster played the tournament from 1990 to 2012. He is one of the few players to play eight tournaments. In the 22-years-span, he has scored 971 runs in 23 games at an average of 52 including two hundreds.

Tendulkar scored his 100th International ton against Bangladesh in the 2012 edition of the tournament. He was part of the 1990 and 1995 winning teams which beat Sri Lanka in the finals on both occasions.

4. Shoaib Malik

The only Pakistan player to feature in the list has played the tournament from 2000 to 2018. In this period, he has played 21 games and has 907 runs to his name with three hundreds and four fifties at an average of 64.78.

These numbers also include the 2016 edition that was played in T20I format for the first time. This year, he won't be part of the tournament as he hasn't been considered.

5. Rohit Sharma

He played his first Asia Cup in 2008 and has become the fifth highest run-getter in the list. In the 27 games he has played, the right-hander has 883 runs to his name, including one hundred and seven fifties.

Just like Malik, he was also part of the 2016 edition. Not to forget, the Mumbaikar was part of the last two editions which the Men In Blue won.
