The year 2023 saw cricketing records tumble across every format of the game. Australia stamped their authority with a thumping win over India in the World Test Championships finals.
While ODI and T20I cricket have had some cracking innings, Test cricket has given us few memorable knocks. Ashes 2023 dominated the headlines as arch-rivals England and Australia played an amazing series.
In this article, we cast a closer look at the top five run-getters in test cricket in 2023.
5- Joe Root – England – 787 runs
After three glorious run-scoring years, Joe Root had a relatively quiet year with the bat in 2023. The 33-year-old played 8 Test matches this year and scored 787 runs with just two centuries and five half-centuries. Despite coming fifth in the leading run-scorers list Joe Root had an amazing average of 65 and a strike rate of 76.
4- Marnus Labuschagne – Australia – 803 runs
2023 has been a productive year for the 29-year-old from Queensland. Marnus Labuschagne played 13 tests this year and scored 803 runs with just a single century. While he might not have scored the truckload of runs like the past few years, Labuschagne played a few vital knocks.
3- Travis Head – Australia – 919 runs
29-year-old Travis Head is Cricket’s best breakout story in 2023 as the Australian batter took the world by storm. Travis Head’s biggest moment was during the WTC 2023 final versus India where he scored a century in Oval. The left-handed batter ended the year with 919 runs from 12 games with five half-centuries to go along with his ton.
2- Steve Smith – Australia – 929 runs
The former Australia skipper continued to prove why he is considered one of the greatest batters in the Test format. Steve Smith played 13 matches and scored 929 runs with three centuries and three half-centuries.
1- Usman Khawaja – Autralia – 1210 runs
The veteran Australian batter was the only player to breach the 1000-run mark during 2023. In early 2023, Khawaja scored his career-best 195 not out versus South Africa and it began a year filled with runs for the batter. In 13 matches, Khawaja scored 1210 runs with 3 centuries with an average of 52.6 making him the best test batter of 2023.
