However, it took 14 years for the six-time ODI World Cup champions to get their hand on the elusive title in the shortest format. Under the leadership of Aaron Finch, the Men in Yellow ended their drought in the 2021 T20 World Cup.

When it comes to setting records, Australians are no strangers to it, regardless of format. 2021 World Cup-winning captain Finch holds the record for the highest individual score (172) in T20Is. Interestingly, three of the four highest scores were registered by Australian batters. The Kangaroos are blessed with some brutal hitters who take on the bowlers without mercy.

5. Aaron Finch - 50 balls vs Zimbabwe

Finch recorded the highest individual score by a batter in T20Is against Zimbabwe in Harare in July 2018. He smashed a blistering 50-ball century in the process and set the stage on fire. The former Australia captain got dismissed in the form of a hit wicket after scoring 172 runs off 76 balls, with 16 fours and 10 sixes. In response to Australia's 229/2, Zimbabwe could only score 129/9 and lost the game by 100 runs. 

4. Glenn Maxwell - 50 balls vs India

Maxwell registered the joint-fastest century for Australia in T20I cricket against India on 27 February 2019. Chasing 190 runs, Australia lost two wickets for 22 runs. However, Maxwell scored a 50-ball century to put his team in the driver's seat. On the back of the all-rounder's 55-ball 113 (seven fours and nine sixes), the visitors made 194/3 in 19.4 overs and won the game by 7 wickets.

3. Glenn Maxwell - 49 balls vs Sri Lanka

Promoted as an opener against Sri Lanka in September 2016, Maxwell scored his maiden T20I century. The right-hander scored a 49-ball century and went on to add another 45 runs. His unbeaten 145 runs off just 64 balls with 14 fours and 9 sixes helped Australia post their highest T20I total of 263/3. In reply, the hosts could only manage 178/9 in their 20 overs and lost the game by 85 runs. 

2. Aaron Finch - 47 balls vs England

In 2013, Finch registered the fastest century by an Australian player in T20Is against England in Southampton. In fact, the opening batter became the first-ever batter to score 150 or more runs. Finch did not stop after making a 47-ball century as he finished with 156 runs off just 63 balls, including 11 fours and 14 sixes. Chasing a massive target of 249, England could score only 209/6 and lost the game by 39 runs.

1. Josh Inglis - 47 balls vs India

Josh Inglish smashed his maiden international century and joined Aaron Finch in becoming the joint-second-fastest Australian batter to hit a T20I ton in 47 balls. In the first T20I against India in Visakhapatnam in 2023, the wicketkeeper-batter put in a brilliant performance to take Australia past 200. Inglis struck 11 fours and eight sixes at a strike rate of 224.49 to make 110 runs.
