The ODI World Cup is all set to begin on 5 October 2023 in India and on 7 August, Australia announce a preliminary squad for the mega event. The same squad has been selected for the South Africa and India tour ahead of the World Cup. However, Marnus Labuschagne failed to get a spot in the squad.
Seeing that, fans came up with some mixed reactions on social media. Meanwhile, Pat Cummins has been named the skipper while he is currently in need of a six-week rehabilitation for the undisplaced fracture of his left radius, as confirmed by Cricket Australia (CA) Chief Selector George Bailey.
“There is an enormous amount of skill and experience in the group, which you need in a World Cup." - Cricket Australia Chief Selector George Bailey
He said: "We view a period of enforced rest for Pat as a positive ahead of this important World Cup campaign. There are still a number of games he could play before the World Cup which is more than enough for him to have a strong preparation." Bailey also claimed that the side has great balance as he said: "This side has been extremely impressive for several years in limited-overs cricket. There is an enormous amount of skill and experience in the group, which you need in a World Cup."
Speaking about Labuschagne, he has played 30 ODIs so far and in 28 innings, he has scored 847 runs, including six fifties and a century. In his last 10 ODI innings, he managed to cross the fifty-run mark only twice. Still, it will be interesting to see whether the Aussies will miss a batter like him during the mega-event. Speaking about the squad, some surprising names like Tanveer Sangha have left fans surprised and curious.
Australia's preliminary World Cup squad: Pat Cummins (c), Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Alex Carey, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Tanveer Sangha, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa.
