A jam-packed Sunday marked the return of the action in the sixteenth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The second doubleheader of the weekend had two games scheduled for the day. Punjab Kings defeated Chennai Super Kings in the opening game by 4 wickets after a thrilling last-ball game. The five-time champion Mumbai Indians faced up against the runners-up from the previous year, Rajasthan Royals, in the day's second game.
The visitors chose to bat first after winning the toss in the day's second game. They got off to a fast start, scoring 72 runs thanks to the opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Butler. Jaiswal's 124 off 62 balls, the highest individual score in the Indian Premier League this year, kept the Royals' innings from becoming a one-man show. Only three other batters could score in excess of ten runs as the Royals finished with 212/7 in 20 overs.
With 3/39 in three overs, Arshad Khan remained the preferred bowler for the Mumbai Indians. Piyush Chawla controlled the run rate in his four overs, surrendering 34 runs while taking two wickets. Both Riley Meredith and Jofra Archer returned home with one wicket each.
Yashasvi Jaiswal's hundred went in vain
In reply, the Mumbai Indians lost their skipper, Rohit Sharma, cheaply, yet again, as he fell after scoring just 3 off 5 balls. Ishan Kishan (28 off 23) and Cameron Green (44 off 26) tried to steady up the innings for the Indians. Suryakumar Yadav then added a quickfire 55 off 29. Ultimately, Tilak Varma (29 off 21) and Tim David (45 off 14) led the final charge for MI, winning the game by 6 wickets.
The Lucknow Super Giants will be the next opponent for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the sixteenth season of the Indian Premier League at the Ekana Sports City Stadium. In contrast to the RCB, who lost to KKR by 21 runs on their journey to Kolkata, LSG enters this game, having crushed Punjab Kings by a 56-run victory.
