Since winning the Indian T20 League title for the fifth time in 2020, Mumbai has struggled to reach the playoffs in the last two seasons. Two years back, the team was exposed on neutral conditions across the two legs of the tournament. However, last year, they had the worst season in their history as they finished last in the points table.
Not to forget, the team also had a poor auction in February last year. This was reflected in the team's performance as they were found wanting in quite a few departments. However, they seem to haven't learned from the mistakes that were visible during the Indian T20 League player auction 2023. In this listicle, we will have a look at three players who might be earning way too much.
Three players who are earning way too much for Indian T20 League 2023
1. Ishan Kishan
The former India U19 skipper was the costliest player of the 2022 edition. His side, Mumbai went all guns blazing for him in the auction and spent 15.25 crores INR. Not to forget, the five-time winners battled with other teams in the fray.
However, the left-hander failed to repay the faith of the team. After playing 14 games, he scored 418 runs with most of the runs coming toward the end of the league stage. By then, his side became the first team to be eliminated from the playoffs race in the 15th season.
2. Rohit Sharma
There is no doubt to the fact that Sharma is the most successful skipper in the history of the league. As captain, he has led the Mumbai side to all five Indian T20 League titles. Apart from him, only Harbhajan Singh led the team to the Champions League title win in 2011.
However, the Indian team skipper hasn't had the best of seasons with the bat since 2020. In the last three seasons, he has managed 332, 381, and 268 respectively. The team would be looking to carry on with his newly-found form for India in the upcoming 16th season of the cash-rich league.
3. Cameron Green
The former champions of the biggest T20 league surprised everyone with the way they went for Green in the player auction 2023. They spent a total of 17.5 crores INR for the Aussie all-rounder.
Notably, this was most of the purse spent by the team. He doesn't have enough experience of playing in Indian conditions during the peak summers of April and May. Also, after looking at their squad, it looks like they spent too much.
