India suffered a nine-wicket loss in Indore against Australia in the third Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. So, an enthralling battle awaits teams and fans in Ahmedabad, starting on 9 March 2023. However, the pitch in Indore was in headlines as the Governing Body of Cricket rated it ‘poor’.

According to match referee Chris Broad’s reports, it read: “The pitch, which was very dry, did not provide a balance between bat and ball, favouring spinners from the start. The fifth ball of the match broke through the pitch surface and continued to occasionally break the surface providing little or no seam movement and there was excessive and uneven bounce throughout the match.”

"How many demerit points did that pitch get and who was the match referee there." - Sunil Gavaskar

They also gave three demerit points to the pitch. Now, reports have come out that the Indian Cricket Board are looking to challenge the rating in the apex council of Cricket. A board official said: “We will take stock of the situation and decide.” As per the rules of the Governing Body of Cricket, the Board need to lodge an appeal against the sanction in 14 days. The first two matches took place in Nagpur and Delhi and they rated those pitches ‘average’. However, if a venue gets five demerit points, then it gets suspended from hosting international matches for 12 months. Recently, the former India cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar claimed that it was quite harsh to give three demerit points to Indore.

He said: "One thing I would like to know, there was this Test match in November in Brisbane Gabba, where the match finished in 2 days. How many demerit points did that pitch get and who was the match referee there. I think 3 demerit points is a little harsh, because, in this pitch, yes the ball turned, but it was not dangerous. When Australia get to a score of 77 for the loss of one wicket it actually tells you that the pitch got a lot better."
