Virat Kohli's decision to step down as India's Test captain took the world by storm. He announced this decision just a day after India lost the three-match Test series to South Africa by 2-1 under his leadership. The BCCI is yet to announce the new Test skipper of the Asian side.
It is to be noted that Rohit Sharma was earlier named the vice-captain in the longest format of the game and thus, he is the most likely candidate to be given the role. However, KL Rahul, who led India in the second Test against the Proteas, might be groomed for the future. Moreover, the likes of Rishabh Pant, Ravichandran Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah are a few other options as well.
Thus, veteran pacer Brett Lee recently went on to speak about the same. While mentioning that he hasn't really followed Indian cricket in the recent past, he stated that India have four to five captaincy options. The legendary pacer also mentioned that it was totally up to the Indian management on whom they deal worthy enough to lead India in red-ball cricket.
“It is totally Virat Kohli’s call. I have been focused on the Big Bash League back home and obviously, the Ashes. I cannot say much about it, it is totally up to Virat Kohli. I think there are four-five players who can lead India in Tests right only, only time will tell. It is totally up to the Indian management, there are four-five players who can do the job," said Brett Lee while speaking to News18.
Besides, several people have also given their opinion on India's Test captain. Shane Warne had recently gone on to say that the Indian management should appoint Rohit Sharma as the Test captain, and groom Jasprit Bumrah for the role in the near future. Sunil Gavaskar, on the other hand, wanted Rishabh Pant to lead India in the longest format of the game.
However, no matter which player is given the responsibility, he will have to do a lot in order to replicate the success of Kohli. The 33-year-old is statistically the greatest Indian Test captain and has won 40 wins. This includes twin series wins in Australia as well.
