The new and exciting format in cricket is all set to return this August as the crowd prepares itself for another action-packed season of ‘The Hundred’. The format was introduced last year by the England and Wales Cricket Board to revive the diminishing interest of the crowd back in cricket.
The Hundred as the name suggests is a 100-ball format where the concept of overs is dismissed. However, a single bowler has to bowl five consecutive balls mandatorily after which the bowling change can come into play. A bowler can also bowl 10 consecutive balls if he wishes. The ends are changed after every 10 balls. The Powerplay lasts for 25 balls in the innings. A single match of the Hundred is usually completed in two and a half hours.
The new format came into being to attract a newer audience to cricket by making the game bit easier to understand for them. The league features eight city-based teams, the same for both men’s and women’s competitions. Both men’s and women’s games happen back-to-back at the same venue with a single ticket giving access to both the matches to the crowd.
The teams finishing at the top of the table after the league matches get a direct entry into the final while team finishing second and third, clash in the eliminator with the winner of the match taking the second spot in the final and the losing team gets eliminated.
Here are a few more peculiarities of the format:
- No crossing over of batsmen allowed during a caught dismissal
- No-balls are penalised with two runs and a free hit
- Slow over-rates are penalised by one lesser fielder being permitted outside the 30-yard circle for the final over.
The Hundred 2022 will once again feature eight Men’s and Women’s teams and the second season of the league is about to go underway from the 3rd of August. Here is all you need to know about the second edition of cricket’s newest format:
