After losing today’s game, Delhi have made it difficult for themselves to reach the playoffs in the ongoing edition of the Indian T20 League. They have suffered a massive defeat at the hands of Chennai in what was their 11th match on Sunday at Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai. Chennai batted first and notched a huge score of 208 runs at the end of the first innings. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway, once again, got the team off to a brilliant start.
The duo added 110-run partnership for the opening wicket before Gaikwad got out for 41 runs in 33 balls. Conway, however, kept scoring boundaries at the other end. He played another match-winning knock of 87 runs in 49 balls.
The New Zealand cricketer smashed his third consecutive fifty in the tournament. He received valuable support from Shivam Dube, who made a handy contribution of 32 runs in 19 balls. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, later, played a 8-ball 21-run unbeaten cameo to stretch the team’s total to above 200. For Delhi, barring Khaleel Ahmed (2 for 28), all the other bowlers had a forgettable outing with the ball.
In pursuit of the big score, S Bharat got out in the second over after scoring two boundaries. David Warner was looking good for his 12-ball 19, however, M Theekshana had him leg-before in the 5th over to leave the team in trouble at 36 for 2.
Mitchell Marsh and Rishabh Pant tried to rebuild as they added 36 runs for the third wicket. Marsh (25 off 20), however, mistimed the ball straight to long-on in the 8th over off Moeen Ali. Marsh’s wicket triggered a collapse as wickets kept falling at regular intervals, thereafter.
Moeen Ali took the crucial wickets of Rishabh Pant (21 off 11) and Ripal Patel (6 off 3) to turn the game completely in favour of Chennai. Delhi lost half of their side for just 81 runs inside the first half of the innings. Rovman Powell was the last hope for them but he too was caught behind in the 11th over off M Chaudhary.
In the end, Delhi were bundled out for just 117 runs. Chennai have again returned to winnings ways and their hopes of reaching the playoffs are still alive. They now have 4 wins to their name in 11 matches. Here’s a look at how fans have reacted to the win.
