On the morning of the first ODI in the series against Bangladesh, Rishabh Pant was ruled out of the series. After speaking with the medical staff, Pant was released from the squad and will join the team ahead of the Test series, the Indian Cricket Board announced via Twitter.
“In consultation with the BCCI Medical Team, Rishabh Pant has been released from the ODI squad. He will join the team ahead of the Test series. No replacement has been sought,” the tweet read.
The Indian Cricket Board withheld any explanation for Pant's exclusion from the ODI squad, which prompted online speculators to wonder what was wrong with the young player. Few claimed that he was dropped due to poor form, but others theorised that Pant was injured and the team did not want to take a chance before the Test series.
"Good for Pant to stay away from criticism. He will score century in Test & again selectors will make him as 1st choice WK batsman for white ball formats. I don't know when this branding will stop," wrote a fan.
Rishabh Pant's interview with Harsha Bhogle
Since fans and experts have questioned Pant's consistency in white-ball cricket, he has come under intense scrutiny. When renowned cricket broadcaster Harsha Bhogle compared Pant to Virender Sehwag, the wicketkeeper-batter received a lot of backlash for his crude response. When Bhogle compared Pant's Test record to his white-ball record, the young man did not take the comparison well and responded in an impolite manner.
“I had asked the same question to Sehwag, now I'll ask you. Looking at you, we get the feeling that white-ball cricket is your USP but it's your Test record that is better,” Bhogle said in Prime Video's pre-match show on Wednesday (November 30).
In response, Pant said that these comparisons should be made in five to six years and added that his record in white-ball matches isn't too bad either. “Sir, records are just numbers. My white-ball record is not bad either,” Pant replied. Doing comparisons is not a part of my life. I'm 24-25, if you want to compare, you can do that when I am 30-32,” he added.
