The final of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 cycle kicked off on 7 June at the Oval between India and Australia. After winning the toss, India opted to bowl first. But, by the end of day one, the decision turned out to be a nightmare for Rohit Sharma and his men. Australia scored 327 runs for three wickets in 85 overs.

Travis Head remained not out on 146* runs while Steve Smith finished the day with 95* runs. After a horrible bowling performance from India, the former India coach, Ravi Shastri slammed Rohit for lacking a positive mindset. He blamed the Team India skipper for lacking proper tactics.

“They gave too long spells to Shami and Siraj at the start.” - Ravi Shastri

While speaking to Star Sports, Shastri said: "Once you had picked the team, it's fine - Ashwin played or not and that you fielded. But you could have been tactically much sounder after that. Siraj and Shami had to bowl their second spells in the first session. They gave too long spells to Shami and Siraj at the start. You know they have not played first-class cricket for three or four months and it will be difficult to bowl the entire day. The thinking should have been that this pitch will improve once the sun comes out, so they should have been preserved and used at the right time.”

“So, in my opinion, a short first spell and all four fast bowlers should have been used in the first two hours of play. Siraj and Shami should have done 70% of the bowling in the first session," he further added. After day one, Head said: "Losing the toss this morning, we've done exceptionally well. There's still plenty there as you could see with that second new ball. A lot of hard work to go tomorrow morning but nice to make a really good start. I was trying to make sure I was in really good positions today. I got tested through parts of that. I just tried to work through those periods and be adjustable. It's nice when you've got a bloke at the other end playing as well as he is, it's a nice start."
