The Ashes 2023 is all set to commence from 16 June. But, on 4 June, England suffered a setback as Jack Leach got ruled out of the series due to a lumbar stress fracture. Leach experienced some "low back symptoms" during the Test against Ireland and after scans, it got confirmed.
So, fans were wondering who will replace the spinner in the squad. Rehan Ahmed was an option while reports of Moeen Ali making a comeback from Test retirement were circulating also. Now, on 7 May, England Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that Moeen has been added to the squad for the first two Ashes Tests.
Moeen Ali announced his Test retirement in September 2021 after England's series against India
Regarding this, the Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket, Rob Key said: “We reached out to Mo (Moeen Ali) early this week about returning to Test cricket. Having had a couple of days to reflect, Mo is excited to join the squad and play Test cricket again. His vast experience, along with his all-round ability, will benefit our Ashes campaign. We wish Mo and the rest of the squad well for the Ashes campaign.” Moeen announced his retirement in Tests in September 2021 after England's series against India. Since then, he has not played a first-class match.
Speaking of his Test career, Moeen Ali has played 64 matches and scored 2914 runs, at an average of 28.29. He has smashed 14 fifties and five centuries also. With the ball, he has taken 195 wickets at an economy of 3.61. The veteran all-rounder also posted two old images of him playing for England in Tests on social media for his fans to acknowledge this opportunity. Seeing him making a comeback in Tests from retirement, fans went crazy and shared their views on social media. He could play a major role in England’s new attacking approach, named ‘Bazball’ with his all-round contribution. Recently, he won the IPL 2023 while playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
