On December 30, 2014, legendary Indian captain MS Dhoni left everyone in a complete state of shock as he announced his retirement from Test Cricket. MS Dhoni shared the news after the Boxing Day Test during India’s 2014-15 tour of Australia. His decision broke many hearts as fans didn't expect him to take a sudden retirement from the longest format of the game.
Recently, during an interview with Gaurav Kapur on his show, named ‘Breakfast with Champions' on Youtube, Indian spinner Axar Patel recalled the whole incident. He drew light on how Ravi Shastri called a meeting to share the news of Dhoni’s retirement in the dressing room. Notably, the players were informed about Dhoni’s retirement on the second day of the Boxing Day Test itself.
"He announced it the next day itself, on the evening of the second day of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. The atmosphere had changed. Everyone was quiet and Ravi (Shastri) bhai called for a meeting. 'Everybody… we have to make an announcement. Mahi is retiring'. (Suresh) Raina started crying. I was like 'What just happened? Everyone around me was tearing up. I was in another world, 'What just happened? What is going on?'," Axar told actor, television and cricket presenter Gaurav Kapur on his famous YouTube Show Breakfast with Champions'.
Incidentally, it was the first time when Axar Patel had met MS Dhoni and to hear about Dhoni’s retirement left him clueless. He also recalled how the former Indian skipper pulled his leg on that day before giving him a warm hug.
"I didn't even know what to say. It was the first time I was meeting Mahi bhai. But before I said anything, he only said: 'Bapu (Axar's nickname… you arrived and made me leave? I was like 'what did I do?'. Then I teared up… I just arrived and he is leaving. He said that he’s just joking and then hugged me," Axar added.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni is currently plying his trade for Chennai in the ongoing T20 League 20222. Notably, he stepped down as the captain of the team prior to the start of the 2022 edition.
